-being outdoors
-it’s about looking at the changing colours in the sky
- it’s about going on walks with friends and family. Catching up on gossip or making future plans.
- About breathing in the outdoors, the sounds, the smells, the light.
- it’s about noticing the little things; a small flower or frosty blade of grass.

So for the first time ever, I stretched a canvas! I know… how clever am I?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The canvas - is heavy duty and already gessoed. I got a roll of it free from an arty colleague! Lots left to make some more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I needed some tools though. Canvas pliers and a stapler!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The stapler - Titan from @screwfix_uk is a beast and bought by my husband (not one to do things by halves!). It’s rechargeable and hold 80 staples and does all the hard work for you. You could probably build a house with this 🤣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Canvas pliers - these were bought from EBay and no particular make. They took a bit of getting used to and working out. I understand that you pull the canvas round the bars, but then the pliers are in the way of where you want to staple, so a heavy thumb was deployed to hold it and I tried not to staple my thumb!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The stretcher bars were left over from the commission for my mother in law which I took off, rolled up and took to Italy over Christmas.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I really felt like I was getting to know my substrate intimately and I’m hoping it will prove to be a masterpiece! Gotta wait and see 😝

3 reasons why I work in multiples
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ to keep it loose. By working on several paintings at once it stops the overthinking and tightening up. You can move freely and quickly between each painting. If you’re stuck on one, I leave it and move on to another, allowing that break means you can come back to it again with fresh eyes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣ it’s a good way to get a cohesive series. By working on all the paintings at the same time, with the same palette of colours, you get a united collection.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3️⃣ it allows you to explore a subject or idea in a more comprehensive and extensive way. This can often start in a sketchbook and progress to drawings and pieces on paper before creating final pieces. The whole journey is a cohesive thought process of an idea or concept and one that the viewer can understand and relate to.

My last (and very special) painting of 2024. Finally at its home in Italy and given to my mother in law as a Christmas present. I was very pleased with the it’s reception 🥹🥰

Taking a canvas off its stretcher bars is harder than you think! Without a special tool I would never have got over 60 staples out!

Taking a canvas off its stretcher bars is harder than you think! Without a special tool I would never have got over 60 staples out!

I needed to do this to roll up this special painting for transportation.

This was my hand luggage!

The final part… varnishing! I like to use a satin varnish by @jacksons_art_gloucester I also have a gloss varnish which I use on my smaller pieces. I find gloss on the larger ones is a bit overwhelming and distracts from the actual paintings.

Sealing in all those marks and brush strokes and lines and scratches and drips and splatters is a lovely and very satisfying feeling 🩵💙

Art styling - it’s a thing! Well of course it is. But doing it successfully is harder than you think. Getting the right props and lighting and angle takes commitment and effort and a good eye!

I just listened to an Art Juice podcast by @alicesheridanstudio with @emuplops all about how Emily uses her house as a gallery to sell art. She takes artists work and hangs them in her own house and as such showcases them in a ‘real’ situation and demonstrates how a piece could look if you styled it in a particular way.

More adding and taking away. I didn’t like that brown bit in the top left so that had to go and then I wanted to add more light so a whole load of blue in the middle 🙈

I love to add collage to my canvases. Here’s why:
📍 Collage is a great way to add interest and texture to a piece which is often not possible with paint alone. Even if it’s painted over, the edges will show or bits of pattern and text
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 incorporating interesting collage gives it a sense of history or narrative and connection to the real world.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 it also gives me something to respond to rather than staring at a blank canvas
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍Introducing differences in a piece can help to develop a design and draws the viewers eye around the painting
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 it helps to create a sturdy layer upon which to add paint, make marks and build history.

For me it’s light. Or rather the light contrasted with the dark. The difference between the two is what makes it interesting and what makes the viewer take note or look again.

And that continues through the painting; rough against smooth, thick against thin, straight against curved etc.
