Some paintings come together quite quickly while others like this one take ages and sit around waiting for that ah ha moment.

I take photographs and play with the editing tool until I find a better composition and arrangements of line and colour.

Wrangling paintings by subtraction and addition is what it’s all about for me. And in so doing I build up lots of history in a piece and interesting layers.

I love cropping down larger pieces to find the little hidden gems.

These are small 12x12cm pieces in box frames and on their way to the @stroudartcoop Group Spring exhibition which is at @lansdownhall in May.

One of the hardest things about being an artist is just getting started!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some of the excuses we all make …
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
↘️ “I don’t have the right supplies.” – The perfect brush or paint color is missing.

↘️“I need to clean my workspace first.” – And that turns into a whole-day project.

↘️ “I’m waiting for inspiration.” – Because creativity must strike like lightning.

↘️“I’m too tired today.” – Energy levels are mysteriously always low at painting time.

↘️“I don’t have enough time to do it properly.” – Even if there are a few hours available.

↘️ “I should practice sketching first.” – A never-ending cycle of prep work.

↘️“I need to research more.” – Falling into a rabbit hole of tutorials and reference images.

↘️“I’ll ruin it if I start now.” – Perfectionism strikes before the first brushstroke.

↘️“The lighting isn’t right.” – Natural light is too bright, too dim, or just wrong.

↘️“I have other things to do first.” – Procrastination disguised as productivity.

↘️“I’m not in the mood.” – Waiting for the elusive “perfect mood” to create.

↘️“What if it doesn’t turn out well?” – Fear of failure before even beginning.

The list goes on! Are you guilty of any or all of these? I know I am! We can be our own worst enemies when it comes to getting started with our creative projects.

For me it’s just about getting the paint out! Then I just plonk paint and marks in a sketch book or on any ‘non precious’ paper. This gets me in the mood and the juices flowing…

So come on! That creatively is just waiting to come out! You’ll be glad you did!

I’ve lost count of the number of paintings I’m currently working on. I think it’s 10 at the last count! I still haven’t started on a big 1x1m one which, quite frankly, I’d struggle to get in the room with everything else!

One of the ways I keep the flow and keep it loose is to paint small sketches in amongst everything else, to try out ideas and colours and techniques. It’s also a great way to use up paint on a palette too!

Exhibition in May so I need to keep momentum and get these finished!

There are several reasons I like to add collage first:

📍 it’s a ‘no pressure’ way of starting a canvas. Looking at a blank white canvas and wondering how to start can be daunting.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍Collage is a great way to add interest and texture to a piece which is often not possible with paint alone. Even if it’s painted over, the relief of the collage will show through.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 incorporating interesting collage gives it a sense of history or narrative and connection to the real world.

📍Introducing differences in a piece can help to develop a design and draws the viewers eye around the painting

Some crops of some bigger pieces on paper -I love seeing how cropping a large piece right down can give you some completely different paintings and sometimes inform you how to move forward.

Right now I’m stuck on a couple of panels and I’m solidly ignoring them!! I really just need to put my big girl pants on and move them forward by doing something drastic, but there’s always the fear that you might paint over a really good bit and lose something😏

I’ve been playing with some studio shots. It’s amazing how you can get some great photos with an iPhone these days.

I remember when you used to take a photo on a digital camera or DSLR if you were fancy and then take out the memory card and plug that into your computer and upload! It was so time consuming 😩

Now we can take a photo, edit it, send it to our computer by Bluetooth and have it uploaded onto a website in no time! Technology is great… when it works 😆

-being outdoors
-it’s about looking at the changing colours in the sky
- it’s about going on walks with friends and family. Catching up on gossip or making future plans.
- About breathing in the outdoors, the sounds, the smells, the light.
- it’s about noticing the little things; a small flower or frosty blade of grass.
