Art styling - it’s a thing! Well of course it is. But doing it successfully is harder than you think. Getting the right props and lighting and angle takes commitment and effort and a good eye!

I just listened to an Art Juice podcast by @alicesheridanstudio with @emuplops all about how Emily uses her house as a gallery to sell art. She takes artists work and hangs them in her own house and as such showcases them in a ‘real’ situation and demonstrates how a piece could look if you styled it in a particular way.

It makes for a very beautiful and colourful Instagram grid and a really interesting way to show and sell art. Check out her account.

I love to add collage to my canvases. Here’s why:
📍 Collage is a great way to add interest and texture to a piece which is often not possible with paint alone. Even if it’s painted over, the edges will show or bits of pattern and text
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 incorporating interesting collage gives it a sense of history or narrative and connection to the real world.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 it also gives me something to respond to rather than staring at a blank canvas
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍Introducing differences in a piece can help to develop a design and draws the viewers eye around the painting
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 it helps to create a sturdy layer upon which to add paint, make marks and build history.

📍it’s fun! It’s a great way to start and to loosen up and get into the flow.

For me it’s light. Or rather the light contrasted with the dark. The difference between the two is what makes it interesting and what makes the viewer take note or look again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And that continues through the painting; rough against smooth, thick against thin, straight against curved etc.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s the differences that makes a painting interesting and keeps your eye moving around.

Don’t forget to write on the back the colours you used to make them, so you can remix it at a later date 😉

My picture shelf is looking quite lovely in the afternoon sunshine. I like all the different sizes and harmonies of colour.

It’s a bit like making a gallery wall, except the beauty is you can change it as often as you like!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I think the only thing I would change about these shelves is to make them a bit deeper so that you you can layer the pictures, I quite like an overlap… thoughts??

Why I add collage…
📍Collage is a great way to add interest and texture to a piece which is often not possible with paint alone. Even if it’s painted over, the edges will show or bits of pattern and text

📍 incorporating interesting collage gives it a sense of history or narrative and connection to the real world.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 it also gives me something to respond to rather than staring at a blank canvas
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍Introducing differences in a piece can help to develop a design and draws the viewers eye around the painting

📍 it helps to create a sturdy layer upon which to add paint, make marks and build history.

Ever used a glass dip pen? I found this in a charity shop a while ago.

It’s a beautiful thing and beautifully weighted and works brilliantly with fountain pen ink 🖋️ it just goes on and on!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️The clever grooves on the nib holds the ink and releases it in a steady flow.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️ it holds more ink than you think! I just love how much ink it holds from one dip!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️The nib doesn’t clog up and can easily be washed. Unlike conventional nibs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️Can be used with acrylic ink too but will need more washing to get it out of the grooves - a toothbrush works well.
